The Amazing Health Benefit of Apple

By: Corrine

Apple have rich nutritional benefits that justify the “apple a day keeps the doctor away”. They are high in Antioxidants, Vitamin C, Potassium, Fiber, low in calories and no cholesterol.

Apples are rich in fructose. Despite their high carbohydrate and sugar content, the glycemic index is low, ranging from 29 to 44. It’s probably due to their high fiber content that helps slow down carbohydrate digestion. If you have diabetes, you may be concerned about impact on your blood glucose levels. The good news is that the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends the inclusion of apples in a diabetes meal plan, as long as it fit into your carbohydrate targets.

Apple are high in polyphenols, which function as antioxidants. These polyphenols are found in both the skin of the apple and in the meat. Large amount of Apple’s vitamin C content is just under the skin. To get the best benefits, choose the organic apple and to eat apples with their skins. This is also where apple’s fiber is found.

Apple work magic on Bad Cholesterol. According to Arjmandi, director of Nutrition Research on Aging at Florida State University, apple pectin (the white stuff under the skin) binds to cholesterol in the gut and ferries it out of the body. Apple helps to decrease LDL “bed” cholesterol and increase “good” cholesterol.

As a good source of antioxidants, apple may help protect against heart disease and lower risk of cancer. Research show that the risk of dying from heart disease was 40% lower in women, and 19% lower in men, for those who consumed at least 44 grams of apples everyday.
